By: Andrea Sanchez-Mendoza If this movie hasn't made it onto your watch list yet, then it is a must add. It is the perfect family movie to watch this spring break. This feel good movie is about two free spirited parents who in their youth said yes to nearly anything. Yet throughout the years have changed, to parents who constantly say no their three children. In order to change their family dynamic Allison and Carlos Torres, played by Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramírez, accept the viral challenge of "yes day". But this isn't your typical family portrayed by Netflix, this is the first mixed latino family portrayed without stereotypes that we have seen in a very long time. What I really enjoyed about this film was that it depicted a multiracial and bilingual family. It was wonderful to view a movie where they didn't make fun of their accents, and speaking Spanish in public. What was truly unique about this diverse casting was that, the issue of race or mixed race was never talked upon throughout the film. It was just something that was viewed as normal, that this type of family is normal and there is no reason for provoking questions, long explanations, weird stares, and generalized stereotyping for these characters. Puerto Rican director Miguel Arteta says that, "the reason that diversity is important [to me] is because I am a Latino that comes from many different areas. I just want to show the world that we are at a place where we don’t even need to necessarily discuss the issue of race every time. You can just cast people that look differently, and that’s something that I was really proud of with Yes Day. This is a mixed family with wonderful Latino kids in it, and it’s just normal". This type of casting should be considered normal because, it reflects the America that we live in today, with mixed couples, and children growing everyday. "America is extremely diverse, and I think we lost track of that", Said Arteta. This is our new normal and film and television should be able to reflect this new normal without any racist jokes or stereotypes added into the plot. Even though this is one step in the right direction, for the future of films. Hollywood still has a long way to go in order to represent minorities in a better light on and off the screen. A recent study done by, USC Annenberg, have found that within Netflix Original series and films based in the United States. That only 4% of latinos were casted in a lead role.
