On March 30, France announced a bill that will ban girls under the age of 18 from wearing hijabs or anything that "signaled women's inferiority to men". France has decided that Islam is oppressing women, and therefore they must take action. But, women who practice the Islamic faith did not ask for help. There was no rallying cry to get France's attention. France just decided they needed to liberate Muslim women from the shackles of what they deemed to be an oppressive religion. Not only is this bill incredibly Islamophobic, becuase France has been trying for decades to get people who practice the Islamic faith to submit to their secular rules and way of life, but it's also ironic. Western countries have an obsession with controlling, policing, and legislating women's bodies. France has taken away Muslim women's right to choose if she wanted to wear a hijab or not. While the bill specifically targets minors from wearing hijabs in public, the bill also will keep mothers from doing basic things like going on school trips with their children if they are wearing a hijab. Western countries, particularly American liberals have done nothing to denounce this bill. Why would they? Islamophobia is rampant in all Western countries and it provides an opening, for America especially, to justify other laws that police women's bodies and actions. America has already imposed it's own sense of morality onto girls from a young age with school dress codes. In America, school dress codes were created under the problematic assumption that "boys will be boys" and because of that girls need to cover up as to not be a distraction to boys' education. There is no regard for her education, however. Girls will be suspended from school because of what they wear, missing out on valuable class time because their bodies caused a 'disruption'. Boys aren't asked to contol themselves or to take responsiblity for their own actions, it's placed soley on girls. The same thing is happening in France with their imposition of what is essentially a national dress code. France's legislative body sees that in some cases, women are oppressed within the Islamic faith. So they target the women. If someone is being oppressed, you don't blame the people who are being oppressed, you blame the oppressor. Men, in both America's school dress codes and in France's hijab ban, are the reasons behind both issues, and yet not one single man is being held accountable. The systems, that are controlled by men that are actually oppressing women are not being addressed. Men aren't going to punish themselves or hold themselves accountable, and we know that. But yes, let's blame women for their own oppression instead of actually solving any problems. That makes perfect sense.
