We have a lot to say...
Have a seat at our table and make yourself at comfortable.
By: Symone Sparks Within the last week, there have been 2 mass shootings. The first one was in Atlanta where a white man shot up three different Asian owned spas, and blamed his homicidal acts on his "sexual urges", and the second one being In Boulder, CO, where a white man shot up a grocery store.
Every time something like this happens, the response is always the same. The community that's directly affected says "it's no longer safe to go to [insert the place where it happened] and it should be." Congress argues about the 2nd amendment, and everyone else mostly stays out of it. Here's the thing: as citizens, we can't depend on Congress to save us. We should have known that the moment they decided to do nothing after, yet another white man, shot up an elementary school in Sandy Hook killing 20 six and seven year olds. That means it's up to us to let the guns go. Now, I'm not suggesting you give up the Glock that's in your nightstand that's your just-in- case or the rifle your dad bought you so that you could go hunting together. No, I'm talking about the AR-15s and other assault weapons. Just give them up. Let them go. Mass shootings aren't being caused by any random gun: it's always assault weapons. We've done this before, ban assault weapons. President Bill Clinton banned assault rifles in 1994, and in the 10 years that the ban was in affect, mass shootings went down 40%. It saved families from tragedy and heartbreak, at least for a little while. Aren't we tired of tragedy? We're still in the middle of a global pandemic where more than 500,000 people have died, and the moment things start to open in America, the shootings begin again. Aren't we tired of having the same debates over and over? Aren't we tired of yet another mass shooting, where we have to remember the dead and listen to people giving their thoughts and prayers? Mass shootings, among other things, is America's pandemic. We don't value each other's lives enough to let the assault weapons go. We don't value each other enough to say that more people shouldn't have to die because of something that shouldn't even be a debate? We have to decide enough is enough. We have to protect ourselves. No one is going to do it for us.
